Of course, and again, we had a fun discussion! Dan, Jo Ann, Karen, David, Robin, Odette, and Nadine attended. We read 1st Corinthians Chapter Two.
Before we began, Jo Ann decided that it might be fun to do some sort of opening “prayer” so Dan led us in singing “Give Us That Old Time Religion!”
Below is a summary Dan wrote up about what we talked about:
‘What is the meaning of “spiritual”? We read this word a lot in 1 Corinthians 2 and I believe that most of us listening considered ourselves to be reasonably “spiritual” people. But it was mentioned, I believe by Robin, that Paul seemed to imply that only people who believed in the death and resurrection of Jesus are spiritual. This passage concluded with not only the assertion that it is important to be spiritual but that these truths cannot be understood without being spiritual.
We had a discussion of the “gift of discernment” and Karen mentioned that she was trying to be discerning as she read about developments in the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.
Dan mentioned that this letter by Paul of Tarsus was a “snapshot” of a certain point in the development of early Christians and that later churches had less emphasis of the “spiritual gifts” and instead developed leadership structures that were similar to that of the Roman government.
