Summary - 3/14/2022 Monday New Testament From a Jewish Point of View Class

Today we studied while Jo Ann and Dan were on the road while driving from Idaho to Colorado.  Modern technology is wonderful since Jo Ann could log into her iPad while Dan drove and facilitate our Zoom study!  Before we began studying, Jo Ann shared some photos of her recent trip to Quebec, Canada!  Odette updated us on her dad.

Jo Ann made everyone co-hosts in case she lost service and that did happen and everyone still got to study and discuss and learn while Jo Ann and Dan “froze” somewhere in Idaho!  Eventually, we got back in.

Dan, Jo Ann, Karen, Odette, Dave, Robin, and Merrill attended.

We were very glad to have Merrill back learning and studying with us after his recent very serious surgery.

We sang the Misheberach Jewish prayer for healing for both David Phillips’ wife Susan who had surgery that morning and for Nadine who had an horrible toothache and was going to have an emergency appointment at the dentist.  We also told Merrill the Misheberach was for him and he said “It’s working!”  Odette led us in singing that prayer since none of us really knew all the words by heart. Thank you Odette!

We also began our study with our new tradition of Dan leading us in singing “Give Me That Old Time Religion.”

We read both chapters 4 and 5 from 1st Corinthians.  Dan said this is a letter in response that Paul wrote to a letter Paul received.  According to Dan, Paul seemed to be a bit sarcastic in Chapter 4.

We noticed that Paul told the receivers of the letter that they had been tattled on.  Paul talks about their sexual immorality and that they were boastful.

Dan asked Merrill if the term “Father” in the Catholic Church leadership comes from Paul saying he was a Father to them in Chapter 4.

There was some discussion (I don’t know how we got to it) about the levels of giving.  Dave shared a web page from a Jewish learning page about all the levels of giving which was quite interesting.

From there we learned that the highest level of giving is when a person helps a person who might be homeless get back on their feet.  Merrill shared how he has converted motels in both Orange County and Long Beach into places those “down on their luck” can live as long as they hold down a job.  Jo Ann shared that one of the happiest times in her life was when she helped others get on their feet.

Robin mentioned that Paul said things like “Don’t judge,” but then judged.  Odette agreed.  Karen talked about how she tries to be humble.

Again, if there is more to add to this summary, please share.
